Technology Innovation Institute to Host 2nd ‘Additive Manufacturing the Future’ Seminar in Abu Dhabi

TII · · Additive Manufacturing Technology Innovation Institute

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) will host the second "Additive Manufacturing the Future" seminar in Abu Dhabi on April 27th. The seminar will gather global experts in additive manufacturing and 3D printing to discuss challenges, opportunities, and emerging trends in the sector. Topics include design, materials, manufacturing processes, industry applications, and standardization. Why it matters: The event indicates the UAE's growing focus on advanced manufacturing technologies like 3D printing, with TII playing a key role in fostering collaboration and innovation.

World of Makers, from the Idea to the Prototype

TII · · Product Infrastructure

A talk at the Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) at TII will discuss rapid prototyping using laser-cutting facilities available at MakerSpace in Al Zeina. The talk will cover constructing prototypes from wood and acrylic and compare this approach to traditional 3D printing. The speakers will also describe the impact of the ‘4th Industrial Revolution’ on manufacturing in the UAE, and how makerspaces can contribute to Operation 300bn. Why it matters: This highlights the UAE's focus on advanced manufacturing and the role of makerspaces in fostering innovation and developing local capabilities.

Bringing supercomputing on demand to the world

KAUST · · Infrastructure Partnership

KAUST startup UnitX, founded by KAUST alumni Kiran Narayanan and Professor Ravi Samtaney, offers on-demand supercomputing services via a cloud-like platform. UnitX aims to democratize access to supercomputing for industries like finance, government, and manufacturing, enabling data-driven decisions and faster product design. The global market for supercomputing as a service is estimated at $224 billion with 25% year-on-year growth. Why it matters: This initiative could significantly boost AI and simulation capabilities for regional enterprises by providing access to advanced computing resources without the prohibitive costs of owning and operating supercomputers.

Less downtime, less energy in predictive maintenance AI solution

MBZUAI · · AI Manufacturing

A team of MBZUAI students won the Pioneers 4.0 Hackathon by developing an AI-based predictive maintenance solution using sensor data. The solution uses data preprocessing techniques and the Prophet model to identify anomalies in manufacturing, leading to energy savings and preventing sensor outages. The hackathon, organized by MoIAT and EDGE, involved 15 students from UAE universities. Why it matters: This highlights the practical application of AI skills being cultivated at UAE universities and their potential to address industrial challenges in line with the UAE's 4IR strategy.

Alumni Focus: Nadia Kouraytem

KAUST · · Research Alumni

KAUST alumna Nadia Kouraytem (M.S. '13, Ph.D. '16) is now a postdoctoral researcher in mechanical engineering at the University of Utah, working on laser-based metal additive manufacturing. During her time at KAUST, she worked in the High-Speed Fluids Imaging Laboratory under Professor Sigurdur Thoroddsen, using high-speed imaging to study fluid dynamics. Her research included investigations of metal sphere impacts on granular media, microbead formation during vapor explosion, and vapor explosions from droplet impacts on heated oil. Why it matters: This highlights KAUST's role in training researchers who are contributing to advanced manufacturing techniques with potential industrial applications.
