Learning Time-Series Representations by Hierarchical Uniformity-Tolerance Latent Balancing

arXiv ·

The paper introduces TimeHUT, a new method for learning time-series representations using hierarchical uniformity-tolerance balancing of contrastive representations. TimeHUT employs a hierarchical setup to learn both instance-wise and temporal information, along with a temperature scheduler to balance uniformity and tolerance. The method was evaluated on UCR, UAE, Yahoo, and KPI datasets, demonstrating superior performance in classification tasks and competitive results in anomaly detection.

FAID: Fine-Grained AI-Generated Text Detection Using Multi-Task Auxiliary and Multi-Level Contrastive Learning

arXiv ·

MBZUAI researchers introduce FAID, a fine-grained AI-generated text detection framework capable of classifying text as human-written, LLM-generated, or collaboratively written. FAID utilizes multi-level contrastive learning and multi-task auxiliary classification to capture authorship and model-specific characteristics, and can identify the underlying LLM family. The framework outperforms existing baselines, especially in generalizing to unseen domains and new LLMs, and includes a multilingual, multi-domain dataset called FAIDSet.

ConDiSR: Contrastive Disentanglement and Style Regularization for Single Domain Generalization

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a new Single Domain Generalization (SDG) method called ConDiSR for medical image classification, using channel-wise contrastive disentanglement and reconstruction-based style regularization. The method is evaluated on multicenter histopathology image classification, achieving a 1% improvement in average accuracy compared to state-of-the-art SDG baselines. Code is available at https://github.com/BioMedIA-MBZUAI/ConDiSR.

PECon: Contrastive Pretraining to Enhance Feature Alignment between CT and EHR Data for Improved Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis

arXiv ·

This paper introduces Pulmonary Embolism Detection using Contrastive Learning (PECon), a supervised contrastive pretraining strategy using both CT scans and EHR data to improve feature alignment between modalities for better PE diagnosis. PECon pulls sample features of the same class together while pushing away features of other classes. The approach achieves state-of-the-art results on the RadFusion dataset, with an F1-score of 0.913 and AUROC of 0.943.

Contrastive Pretraining for Echocardiography Segmentation with Limited Data

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a self-supervised contrastive learning method for segmenting the left ventricle in echocardiography images when limited labeled data is available. The approach uses contrastive pretraining to improve the performance of UNet and DeepLabV3 segmentation networks. Experiments on the EchoNet-Dynamic dataset show the method achieves a Dice score of 0.9252, outperforming existing approaches, with code available on Github.

Improving diagnoses of a dangerous condition

MBZUAI ·

MBZUAI and Sheikh Shakbout Medical City researchers developed PECon, a deep learning method for pulmonary embolism detection using CT scans and electronic health records. PECon uses neural networks and contrastive learning to encode and align image and text data. The method aims to improve diagnosis accuracy and speed, potentially saving lives. Why it matters: This research demonstrates AI's potential to enhance medical diagnostics in the UAE, addressing a critical healthcare challenge.

A Benchmark Study of Contrastive Learning for Arabic Social Meaning

arXiv ·

This paper presents a benchmark study of contrastive learning (CL) methods applied to Arabic social meaning tasks like sentiment analysis and dialect identification. The study compares state-of-the-art supervised CL techniques against vanilla fine-tuning across a range of tasks. Results indicate that CL methods outperform vanilla fine-tuning in most cases and demonstrate data efficiency. Why it matters: This work highlights the potential of contrastive learning for improving performance in Arabic NLP, especially in low-resource scenarios.

Multimodal pretraining for objectionable content detection in videos

MBZUAI ·

Thamar Solorio from the University of Houston presented preliminary work on multimodal representation learning for detecting objectionable content in videos at MBZUAI. The research investigates two multimodal pretraining mechanisms, finding contrastive learning more effective than unimodal representation prediction. The study also assesses the value of common multimodal corpora for this task. Why it matters: This research contributes to the development of AI techniques for content moderation, an important issue for online platforms in the Middle East and globally.
