KAUST-Nobel Laureate Collaboration Bringing Light to the World

KAUST ·

KAUST Professor Boon Ooi, Nobel laureate Shuji Nakamura from UCSB, and KACST researchers are collaborating on laser-based solid-state lighting (SSL) through a 2014 tripartite agreement. Their research focuses on SSL, which has the potential to be even more energy-efficient than existing LED lighting by using semiconductor lasers. Nakamura, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014 for developing blue LEDs, spoke at KAUST about the potential of SSL to improve energy efficiency further. Why it matters: This collaboration aims to advance energy-efficient lighting technologies, leveraging Nobel-winning expertise to develop solutions that could significantly reduce global energy consumption.

LAraBench: Benchmarking Arabic AI with Large Language Models

arXiv ·

LAraBench introduces a benchmark for Arabic NLP and speech processing, evaluating LLMs like GPT-3.5-turbo, GPT-4, BLOOMZ, Jais-13b-chat, Whisper, and USM. The benchmark covers 33 tasks across 61 datasets, using zero-shot and few-shot learning techniques. Results show that SOTA models generally outperform LLMs in zero-shot settings, though larger LLMs with few-shot learning reduce the gap. Why it matters: This benchmark helps assess and improve the performance of LLMs on Arabic language tasks, highlighting areas where specialized models still excel.

KAUST collaboration to benefit life sciences and nanotechnology research

KAUST ·

KAUST and the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) have signed an agreement to collaborate on research in life sciences, AI, robotics, rehabilitation technologies, and nanotechnologies. The partnership will involve joint research projects, academic exchanges, and scientific events. KAUST aims to accelerate innovation and address global challenges by integrating advanced technology and scientific expertise with IIT. Why it matters: This collaboration strengthens KAUST's international research network and supports the development of advanced technologies with potential benefits for Saudi Arabia and the global community.
