Learning Time-Series Representations by Hierarchical Uniformity-Tolerance Latent Balancing

arXiv ·

The paper introduces TimeHUT, a new method for learning time-series representations using hierarchical uniformity-tolerance balancing of contrastive representations. TimeHUT employs a hierarchical setup to learn both instance-wise and temporal information, along with a temperature scheduler to balance uniformity and tolerance. The method was evaluated on UCR, UAE, Yahoo, and KPI datasets, demonstrating superior performance in classification tasks and competitive results in anomaly detection.

Designing the Architecture of a Convolutional Neural Network Automatically for Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a method for automatically designing convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures tailored for diabetic retinopathy (DR) diagnosis using fundus images. The approach uses k-medoid clustering, PCA, and inter/intra-class variations to optimize CNN depth and width. Validated on datasets including a local Saudi dataset and Kaggle benchmarks, the custom-designed models outperform pre-trained CNNs with fewer parameters.

Tomato Maturity Recognition with Convolutional Transformers

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a convolutional transformer model for classifying tomato maturity, along with a new UAE-sourced dataset, KUTomaData, for training segmentation and classification models. The model combines CNNs and transformers and was tested against two public datasets. Results showed state-of-the-art performance, outperforming existing methods by significant margins in mAP scores across all three datasets.

ASAD: A Twitter-based Benchmark Arabic Sentiment Analysis Dataset

arXiv ·

Researchers introduce ASAD, a new large-scale, high-quality Arabic Sentiment Analysis Dataset based on 95K tweets with positive, negative, and neutral labels. The dataset is launched with a competition sponsored by KAUST offering a total of 17000 USD in prizes. Baseline models are implemented and results reported to provide a reference for competition participants.

Modeling Complex Object Changes in Satellite Image Time-Series: Approach based on CSP and Spatiotemporal Graph

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a novel approach for monitoring and analyzing the evolution of complex geographic objects in satellite image time-series. The method uses a spatiotemporal graph and constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) to model and analyze object changes. Experiments on real-world satellite images from Saudi Arabian cities demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Alumni Spotlight: How Abdelrahman Shaker learned to redefine impact in AI

MBZUAI ·

MBZUAI alumnus Abdelrahman Shaker discusses his evolving perspective on impactful AI research, shifting from publication counts to real-world usefulness. He highlights the success of his SwiftFormer and EdgeNext papers, which have been adopted by third parties and reached millions of users. Shaker chose MBZUAI for its faculty expertise, which led to 10 publications and over 2,500 citations during his Ph.D.

The search for an antidote to Byzantine attacks

MBZUAI ·

MBZUAI researchers have developed 'Byzantine antidote' (Bant), a novel defense mechanism against Byzantine attacks in federated learning. Bant uses trust scores and a trial function to dynamically filter and neutralize corrupted updates, even when a majority of nodes are compromised. The research was presented at the 40th Annual AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

ArabJobs: A Multinational Corpus of Arabic Job Ads

arXiv ·

The ArabJobs dataset is a new corpus of over 8,500 Arabic job advertisements collected from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The dataset contains over 550,000 words and captures linguistic, regional, and socio-economic variation in the Arab labor market. It is available on GitHub and can be used for fairness-aware Arabic NLP and labor market research.
