MBZUAI launches Ruwwad AI Scholars Fellowship to build UAE’s next generation of AI faculty

MBZUAI ·

MBZUAI has launched the Ruwwad AI Scholars (RAIS) program, a postdoctoral fellowship for Emirati Ph.D. graduates to undertake two-year, fully-funded research positions at leading global institutions. The program aims to cultivate local talent in AI and computational research, with the goal of strengthening participants' eligibility for faculty positions at MBZUAI. The fellowship covers a stipend, research funds, insurance, relocation support, and conference travel.

UI-Level Evaluation of ALLaM 34B: Measuring an Arabic-Centric LLM via HUMAIN Chat

arXiv ·

This paper presents a UI-level evaluation of ALLaM-34B, an Arabic-centric LLM developed by SDAIA and deployed in the HUMAIN Chat service. The evaluation used a prompt pack spanning various Arabic dialects, code-switching, reasoning, and safety, with outputs scored by frontier LLM judges. Results indicate strong performance in generation, code-switching, MSA handling, reasoning, and improved dialect fidelity, positioning ALLaM-34B as a robust Arabic LLM suitable for real-world use.

ArabJobs: A Multinational Corpus of Arabic Job Ads

arXiv ·

The ArabJobs dataset is a new corpus of over 8,500 Arabic job advertisements collected from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The dataset contains over 550,000 words and captures linguistic, regional, and socio-economic variation in the Arab labor market. It is available on GitHub and can be used for fairness-aware Arabic NLP and labor market research.

Why AI can describe an image but struggles to understand the culture inside it

MBZUAI ·

MBZUAI researchers release JEEM, a new benchmark dataset for evaluating vision-language models on Arabic dialects. The dataset covers image captioning and visual question answering tasks using images from Jordan, UAE, Egypt, and Morocco. Results show models struggle with cultural understanding and relevance despite fluent language generation.

SlimPajama-DC: Understanding Data Combinations for LLM Training

arXiv ·

Researchers at MBZUAI release SlimPajama-DC, an empirical analysis of data combinations for pretraining LLMs using the SlimPajama dataset. The study examines the impact of global vs. local deduplication and the proportions of highly-deduplicated multi-source datasets. Results show that increased data diversity after global deduplication is crucial, with the best configuration outperforming models trained on RedPajama.

Domain Adaptable Fine-Tune Distillation Framework For Advancing Farm Surveillance

arXiv ·

The paper introduces a framework for camel farm monitoring using a combination of automated annotation and fine-tune distillation. The Unified Auto-Annotation framework uses GroundingDINO and SAM to automatically annotate surveillance video data. The Fine-Tune Distillation framework then fine-tunes student models like YOLOv8, transferring knowledge from a larger teacher model, using data from Al-Marmoom Camel Farm in Dubai.
