The Symposium on Data Mining and Applications (SDMA 2014) was organized by MEGDAM to foster collaboration among data mining and machine learning researchers in Saudi Arabia, GCC countries, and the Middle East. The symposium covered areas such as statistics, computational intelligence, pattern recognition, databases, Big Data Mining and visualization. Acceptance was based on originality, significance and quality of contribution.
Dr. Abdelrahman AlMahmoud from TII's Secure Systems Research Center (SSRC) will participate in a WGISTA webinar on adopting a digital mindset in auditing and fighting corruption. The webinar, organized by the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI), will discuss the impact of emerging technologies on public sector auditing. Dr. AlMahmoud will share insights on how AI and Big Data can enable auditors to process data at a new scale. Why it matters: This highlights the UAE's growing role in applying advanced technologies like AI and big data to improve governance and accountability in the public sector.
KAUST's Innovation and Economic Development department hosted the STEAM Innovation Challenge with over 300 Saudi university students participating. The challenge, entitled "Secure Generation 2030" in partnership with Northrop Grumman, focused on solutions for cybersecurity, supply chain localization, and the environment. Winning projects included Wajid, an app for finding missing persons during Hajj, Sitlr, a parental control app, and ClinTech, a waste management service. Why it matters: The STEAM Innovation Challenge and similar KAUST initiatives are important for fostering entrepreneurship among young Saudis in line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 economic transformation objectives.
The 2018 TAQADAM Accelerator Showcase, a partnership between KAUST and SABB, awarded SAR 2.25 million in follow-on funding to winning startups. 24 startup graduates from 11 universities in Saudi Arabia participated, each having received SAR 75,000 in initial grant funding. Winning startups included Wayakit, with an instant laundry spray, and EDAMA Organic Solutions, focused on converting organic waste into soil conditioners. Why it matters: This accelerator program highlights the growing focus on deep tech innovation and entrepreneurship within Saudi Arabia's research and business ecosystems.
KAUST, the National Livestock and Fisheries Development Program (NLFDP), and the National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture (Estidama) are collaborating to explore algae-based biostimulants for agriculture. These biostimulants, derived from marine algae, enhance plant growth and nutrient uptake without the negative impacts of chemical fertilizers. KAUST already operates a commercial-scale algae manufacturing plant capable of producing tons of algae per month for biostimulant production. Why it matters: This initiative positions Saudi Arabia as a leader in sustainable food technology by leveraging algae biostimulants to improve soil health and reduce dependence on imported raw materials.
Al-Maha Systems, a startup founded by KAUST students, has developed an IoT system for livestock health tracking. The system uses sensors attached to cows to monitor vital data like heart rate and body temperature, transmitting it to a cloud server. The goal is to detect health problems early and optimize breeding times for dairy farms. Why it matters: This innovation can improve efficiency and productivity in Saudi Arabia's dairy industry by leveraging IoT for animal husbandry.
Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi has launched the UAE’s first secure cloud technologies programme via its Cryptography Research Center (CRC). The program will focus on advancing Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) like fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) and secure multi-party computation (MPC). TII researchers are also developing hardware accelerators to improve the efficiency of FHE. Why it matters: The initiative addresses growing security and privacy challenges in cloud computing, positioning the UAE as a leader in advanced cryptographic solutions for data protection.
