CRC Seminar Series - Cristofaro Mune, Niek Timmers

TII ·

Cristofaro Mune and Niek Timmers presented a seminar on bypassing unbreakable crypto using fault injection on Espressif ESP32 chips. The presentation detailed how the hardware-based Encrypted Secure Boot implementation of the ESP32 SoC was bypassed using a single EM glitch, without knowing the decryption key. This attack exploited multiple hardware vulnerabilities, enabling arbitrary code execution and extraction of plain-text data from external flash. Why it matters: The research highlights critical security vulnerabilities in embedded systems and the potential for fault injection attacks to bypass secure boot mechanisms, necessitating stronger hardware-level security measures.

Biweekly research update

KAUST ·

KAUST researchers demonstrated a new flash memory device design using gallium oxide, which can withstand harsh environments. In collaboration with the University of Michigan, KAUST researchers explained a key molecular event for the activation of an enzyme associated with cancer. The Summer 2023 issue of KAUST Discovery is now available. Why it matters: These research achievements highlight KAUST's contributions to advanced materials science and biomedical research, with potential applications in space technology and cancer treatment.

TII and Space42 Join Forces to Build the UAE’s First Space-to-Ground Quantum Communication Network

TII ·

TII and Space42 are partnering to develop the UAE’s first space-to-ground quantum communication network, integrating satellite and ground-based systems using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology. The collaboration aims to develop, test, and deploy a space-based QKD solution, validating secure quantum communication links via satellite. The agreement, signed at the Dubai Airshow, covers R&D, payload development, satellite integration, and ground infrastructure. Why it matters: This initiative strengthens the UAE's cyber resilience and positions it as a leader in secure communication technologies and quantum-secure space systems.

Computing in the Post-Moore Era

MBZUAI ·

A professor from EPFL (Lausanne) gave a talk at MBZUAI on computing in the post-Moore era, highlighting the slowing of Moore's Law due to physical limits in transistor miniaturization. He discussed research challenges and opportunities for future computing technologies. He presented examples of post-Moore technologies he helped develop in the datacenter space. Why it matters: As Moore's Law slows, research into alternative computing paradigms becomes critical for the continued advancement of AI and digital services in the UAE and globally.

Device to circuit to system

KAUST ·

A KAUST team led by Hossein Fariborzi won second place in the MEMS Design Contest for their "MEMS Resonator for Oscillator, Tunable Filter and Re-Programmable Logic Applications." The device is runtime-reprogrammable, allowing the function of each device in the circuit to be changed during operation. The KAUST team demonstrated that two MEMS resonators could replace over 20 transistors in applications like digital adders, reducing digital circuit complexity. Why it matters: This innovation could significantly reduce power consumption, chip area, and manufacturing costs in microprocessors, advancing the development of energy-efficient microcomputers in the region.

Excyton image technology provides more power and color with less energy

KAUST ·

Excyton, a startup based at KAUST, has developed a novel display technology called “TurboLED” that reduces power consumption by 50% and increases the color range rendered on displays to 76%. The technology utilizes a six sub-pixel format (light and deep RGB) compared to the standard three, saving energy by using lighter colors most of the time. Excyton received $2 million in funding from KAUST Innovation Ventures and collaborated with KAUST to develop the technology. Why it matters: This innovation could significantly improve the battery life of mobile devices while also enhancing display quality, providing a competitive advantage for devices manufactured in the region.
