Keith Ross, Dean of Computer Science, Data Science and Engineering at NYU Shanghai, will be giving a talk on recent advances in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). The talk will review DRL breakthroughs and discuss algorithmic research on DRL for high-dimensional state and action spaces, with applications to robotic locomotion. Ross's research interests include deep reinforcement learning, Internet privacy, peer-to-peer networking, and computer network modeling. Why it matters: Reinforcement learning is a core area of AI research in the GCC region, and a talk by a prominent researcher can help inform and inspire local researchers.
This paper introduces a domain generalization (DG) method for Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) classification that maximizes mutual information using a large pretrained model. The method aims to address the challenge of domain shift in medical imaging caused by variations in data acquisition. Experiments on public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques, achieving a 5.25% improvement in average accuracy.
The inaugural ASPIRE Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) will take place on April 27th at the Yas Marina Circuit with 8 teams competing for a $2.25 million prize. Teams will use identical Dallara Super Formula SF23 cars autonomized by TII, relying on their coding and AI algorithms to race. The event will feature autonomous cars racing simultaneously and an AI vs Human race with former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat. Why it matters: This event highlights the UAE's commitment to advancing AI and autonomous systems, potentially establishing Abu Dhabi as a hub for autonomous vehicle innovation in extreme conditions.
The Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) is partnering with Montena Technology to study high-altitude electromagnetic pulses and design infrastructure safeguards. DERC is also collaborating with Radaz to evaluate ground penetrating and synthetic aperture radars in Abu Dhabi, aiming to identify natural resources. Additionally, DERC and Université de Picardie Jules Verne are working on laser sources and sensors, with a DERC researcher spending four years in France. Why it matters: These partnerships enhance DERC's research capabilities in critical areas like infrastructure protection, resource exploration, and advanced sensing technologies.
This paper details the autonomous drone racing system developed for the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) x Drone Champions League competition. The system uses drift-corrected monocular Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) fused with YOLO-based gate detection for global position measurements, managed via Kalman filter. A perception-aware planner generates trajectories balancing speed and gate visibility. Why it matters: The system's podium finishes validate the effectiveness of monocular vision-based autonomous drone flight and showcases advancements in AI-powered robotics within the UAE.
The Digital Science Research Center (DSRC) has appointed Prof. David Naccache to its Board of Advisors for the Digital Security Unit. Prof. Naccache's experience includes cryptography and security, with prior roles at École Normale Supérieure (ENS) and Gemplus. He will provide external research assessment and foster collaboration between TII, ENS, RUHL and ULux. Why it matters: The appointment strengthens DSRC's digital security research capabilities through Prof. Naccache's expertise and academic network.
