MBZUAI alumnus Kane Lindsay is using AI to digitize and analyze plant specimens at Kew Gardens, including handwritten notes and preserved plants dating back centuries. He developed an AI model to recognize handwriting (OCR) and extract phenotype data from plant images, and another to redact sensitive location data. MBZUAI students Mugariya Farooq and Sarah Al Barri created a machine learning framework that classifies plant diseases from images and predicts yield using data inputs. Their project won second place at the Agritech Hackathon organized by the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Authority (ADAFSA). The algorithm boasts accuracy above 99% when tested against agricultural scientists. MBZUAI alumna Akbobek Abilkaiyrkyzy, who graduated with a master's in machine learning in 2022, has been involved in various domains, including industry, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. Her master's thesis focused on developing a chatbot for mental health problem detection, leading to the creation of WellRound, an app that uses data from various sources to improve mental and physical wellbeing. She further developed the app with support from the MBZUAI Incubation and Entrepreneurship Center (MIEC).
