Community-Based Early-Stage Chronic Kidney Disease Screening using Explainable Machine Learning for Low-Resource Settings

arXiv · · Significant research

Summary

This paper introduces an explainable machine learning framework for early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) screening, specifically designed for low-resource settings in Bangladesh and South Asia. The framework utilizes a community-based dataset from Bangladesh and evaluates multiple ML classifiers with feature selection techniques. Results show that the ML models achieve high accuracy and sensitivity, outperforming existing screening tools and demonstrating strong generalizability across independent datasets from India, the UAE, and Bangladesh.

Clinical prediction system of complications among COVID-19 patients: a development and validation retrospective multicentre study

arXiv ·

A retrospective study in Abu Dhabi, UAE, developed a machine learning-based prognostic system to predict the risk of seven complications in COVID-19 patients using data from 3,352 patient encounters. The system, trained on data from the first 24 hours of admission, achieved high accuracy (AUROC > 0.80) in predicting complications like AKI, ARDS, and elevated biomarkers in geographically split test sets. The models primarily used gradient boosting and logistic regression.

Interpretable and synergistic deep learning for visual explanation and statistical estimations of segmentation of disease features from medical images

arXiv ·

The study compares deep learning models trained via transfer learning from ImageNet (TII-models) against those trained solely on medical images (LMI-models) for disease segmentation. Results show that combining outputs from both model types can improve segmentation performance by up to 10% in certain scenarios. A repository of models, code, and over 10,000 medical images is available on GitHub to facilitate further research.

A Feed-Forward Artificial Intelligence Pipeline for Sustainable Desalination under Climate Uncertainties: UAE Insights

arXiv ·

Researchers developed a two-stage AI pipeline to predict desalination performance efficiency losses due to climate factors in the UAE, achieving 98% accuracy. The model forecasts aerosol optical depth (AOD) and uses it to predict desalination efficiency, incorporating meteorological data. A dust-aware control logic was developed to optimize plant operations, and an interactive dashboard was created for decision support.

Towards a Deep Learning Pain-Level Detection Deployment at UAE for Patient-Centric-Pain Management and Diagnosis Support: Framework and Performance Evaluation

arXiv ·

This paper introduces a deep learning framework for automated pain-level detection, designed for deployment in the UAE healthcare system. The system aims to assist in patient-centric pain management and diagnosis support, particularly relevant in situations with medical staff shortages. The research assesses the framework's performance using common approaches, indicating its potential for accurate pain level identification.
