KAUST hosted the inaugural in-person World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Summer School in Saudi Arabia, in partnership with the Saudi Authority on Intellectual Property (SAIP). The summer school brought together 40 participants of 22 nationalities along with 10 international and local speakers. Participants covered topics such as copyright, patents, trademarks, and technology transfer. KAUST's Innovation and Economic Development department hosted the STEAM Innovation Challenge with over 300 Saudi university students participating. Winning projects included Wajid, an app for finding missing persons during Hajj, Sitlr, a parental control app, and ClinTech, a waste management service. A partner at Oblon, Stefan Uwe Koschmieder, explained key points for patenting software and AI inventions. Koschmieder works with GCC universities on IP programs and advises foreign clients on IP portfolio management. He also lectured at Freie Universität Berlin on Intellectual Property. Uwaidh Al-Harethi, executive VP at SABIC, spoke at KAUST's 2019 Winter Enrichment Program about the importance of innovation, noting that leading tech companies invest heavily to penetrate markets. He highlighted Samsung's patent filings and Amazon's innovation spending. Al-Harethi stated that SABIC makes three dollars for every one dollar spent on innovation, emphasizing its role in the chemical industry's success.
